Project Description

This fast-tracked WMATA project consists of 2 major elements. The first is to replace the deteriorated concrete Rockville Metro canopy with a new Steel structure. To achieve this, the existing 300 foot long canopy must be first shored up before demolition can begin. The new steel structure will have Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite (GFRPC) cladding and EPDM roofing. New Skylights will be installed along with new lighting and speakers. The Rockville canopy, valued at $15M must be completed within 80 days. As designed, the new canopy will look a lot like the old canopy, just better.

The second part of the project involves repairing 10 WMATA Aerial structures/bridges that have major structural issues, valued at $44M. This requires setting up maintenance of traffic and engineered scaffolding systems to perform the work. Two runs of Aerial Structures, Grosvenor (red Line) and Minnesota Avenue (Blue / Orange Line), require adding major structural post-tensioned concrete structures to reinforce the existing piers.

The other eight bridges referred to as the Segmental Bridges will be rehabilitated to bring the bridge superstructures back to a state of good repair. That requires post-tension anchorage repairs, tendon duct repairs, interior and exterior coatings, and misc box girder concrete repairs. These bridges will remain in service while we perform the work, with very limited shutdowns.
